Story maps are resources that integrate maps, essays and other library resources to narrate an event. The experts in the QEII Library map room have developed six Story Maps related to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in the First World War. 

Gallipoli was the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s first action of WWI, from September 1915 to January 1916 in the Mediterranean region of Turkey.

Beaumont-Hamel was the Royal Newfoundland Regiments’s first engagement on the Western Front, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916.

On October 12, 1916, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment attacked Gueudecourt as part of the Battle of Le Transloy, a renewed October Allied offensive in the Somme region.

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s involvement at Monchy-le-Preux on April 14, 1917 formed part of the Battle of Arras, fought from April 9 to May 16.”



In the second half of November 1917, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment participated in the British efforts to disrupt the supply lines to the German Hindenburg Line, known as the Battle of Cambrai.

From August 8 until November 11, 1918, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment participated in a number of actions in the Hundred Days Offensive as the war effort drew to a conclusion
